Did you know... that the single best way to protect against influenza pneumonia is to get vaccinated? Flu vaccine triggers the body’s immune system to develop protection (antibodies) against influenza viruses within two weeks. Each injected vaccine contains three attenuated or killed influenza viruses. The viruses in the vaccine change each year based on international surveillance and estimates by researchers about which types and strains of viruses will circulate in the given year. There are two types of vaccines available in the United States:The “flu shot” – an inactivated or killed virus that is given with a needle, usually in the arm. The flu shot is approved for use in persons older than six months of age.  “Nasal Spray” – flu vaccine made with live weakened viruses that do not cause the flu. The magical holiday tradition continues! Bring the whole family to the Placerville Downtown Association’s Festival of Lights on Friday, November 28. This FREE holiday welcoming ceremony starts at 5:30 p.m. and clear, cold and dry weather is on the wish list! Most of downtown’s Historic Main Street will be closed to host performers at the Courthouse, the Bell Tower and several other locations. Stroll down Main Street or take a ride on the stagecoach and enjoy the local bands, jazz groups, dancers and singers. In addition to the entertainment, this is also the first day of the Merchants Open House, where visitors can enjoy goodies from merchants and view beautifully decorated windows and roof lines.And best of all, the tree lighting will feature a lighting countdown at 6 p.m. by Miss El Dorado, Marissa Santana, followed by a visit from a jolly fellow in a red suit who will set up headquarters in River City Bank from 6:15 to 7:30 p.m. Photos will be available (for a fee), but are not required to visit Santa. The Holly Jolly Trolley will provide free transportation between The Mountain Democrat parking lot, the Placerville Park and Ride Station on Mosquito Road (next to EID), and the bus stop near Bank of America on Sacramento Street. Many public lots will be available for parking, but may fill up quickly. Shuttle service will be available every 30 minutes from 5 p.m. until the last downtown pick-up at 8:45 p.m. Merchants and restaurants will stay open and stagecoach rides will run from 4 to 8 p.m. near the Bell Tower. …the Children’s Center at Sutter Medical Center offers a series of educational podcasts for parents, young adults and teenagers on current health topics relating to children and adolescence? “Parents encounter new questions and concerns about their children on a daily basis. But, having time to find the answers can be difficult,” says Gregory Janos, M.D., and Medical Director of Children’s Services at SMCS. “These podcasts can provide the answers parents need, when they need them. Each difficult question is answered by Sutter’s expert specialist in that subject.” The podcasts are free and you can listen to them on your computer or download them to an MP3 player. Current podcast episodes include Potty Training 101, Food Allergies in Children, Childhood Eczema, Sleep Disorders and Facts about the HPV vaccine.
