Did You Know...

Did you know... that the single best way to protect against influenza pneumonia is to get vaccinated? Flu vaccine triggers the body’s immune system to develop protection (antibodies) against influenza viruses within two weeks. Each injected vaccine contains three attenuated or killed influenza viruses. The viruses in the vaccine change each year based on international surveillance and estimates by researchers about which types and strains of viruses will circulate in the given year. There are two types of vaccines available in the United States:

  1. The “flu shot” – an inactivated or killed virus that is given with a needle, usually in the arm. The flu shot is approved for use in persons older than six months of age.
  2. “Nasal Spray” – flu vaccine made with live weakened viruses that do not cause the flu. This vaccine is approved for use in healthy persons ages 2-49 who are not pregnant.
