Brickyard Kitchen and Bar: Elevated Pub Grub
Brickyard Kitchen and Bar, 1475 Eureka Road, Suite 120, Roseville, 916-836-8406, brickyard916.com
I stopped by on a busy Friday evening (just missing the 3-6 p.m. Happy Hour) and sat at the bar, ready to wage war on all things protein and carbohydrate. After sampling a few craft beers, I moved on to another necessary carb: the Brick Fries, featuring crispy spuds with creamy gorgonzola, chili oil, and enough punch of red pepper flakes to make sure you’re drinking one of the 16 rotating beers on tap.
After quizzing my bartender on his favorite menu item (chicken street tacos), I manned up and ordered the trio—pork, steak, and chicken (they also offer vegetarian but, as stated, this was war and no one goes to battle on salad). Admittedly, the shredded chicken with pico de gallo, sliced avocado, and serrano-citrus aioli was my favorite also, but who can argue with steak or pork? The balloting was close.
Sticking with a brew-themed adventure, I ordered the beer-battered fish and chips with fries and a refreshing coleslaw dressed in serrano-citrus aioli. The fish was exactly what I like in my F&C: large pieces of flaky, white cod with a crispy, crunchy, crave-worthy exterior that’s too much work (and mess) to duplicate at home.
OK, here’s where things got a little dicey. Maybe it was the beer catching up, but the peanut butter burger somehow seemed intriguing. I’m a curious sort, but peanut butter on a hamburger? Here are the facts, ma’am: It’s Thai peanut sauce, not your everyday American-style Jiffy in a jar and complemented—as opposed to overpowered—the other ingredients. Combined with pickled jalapeños, sharp white cheddar, and…wait for it…bacon, it was a must-try menu item.
