What's Up: Roseville Granite Bay Rocklin

Applications for the annual S.P.R.O.W.T. (Supporting and Promoting Real Opportunities for Women to Thrive) Scholarship—which was developed by Christa Clark, MD, FACS, of Granite Bay Cosmetic Surgery to help support and empower women in California who are following a non-traditional educational path as they pursue higher education—are currently open. Through August 31, all non-traditional, female students who live and plan to attend school in California are welcome to apply for the $2,500 scholarship. The State of California and Placer County recognized Del Oro High School couseling secretary Donna Silva as a Classified Employee of the Year. Silva, a Loomis native, graduated from Del Oro and has worked there for 23 years, where she has been described as the glue that keeps the counseling department together. Congrats!

Congrats to Rohan Sharma, a student at Whitney High School, who placed second at the American Association of University Women 2018 Speech Trek California State Contest for his inspirational speech on “How Can We Stand Up to Sexism?” For his efforts, Sharma was awarded $1,000.

Exciting news for William Jessup University’s baseball program! Not only did their record-breaking 41-win season bring the team to the NAIA Open Rounds, but the Los Angeles Dodgers drafted Jessup student Andrew Shaps.

Congrats to Pola Kalchenko, a custodian at Penryn Elementary, who was named Classified Employee of the Year for Maintenance, Operations, and Facilities. Kalchenko has worked at the school for 15 years, takes great pride in her work, and cares for the students greatly.

The Sierra College Robotics Club competed in two categories at the world’s largest robotic competition, RoboGames, in Pleasanton earlier this spring and won second place in the firefighting event. Congrats to the team and TSI Semiconductors, the club’s sponsor.

Roseville’s newest school will be named Riego Creek Elementary and accommodate 800 students with a music room on a 10-acre site. Though still in the planning and approval phase, the institution could be completed as early as 2022. The school will serve transitional kindergarten through fifth grade students living in the Fiddyment Farm neighborhood.

The Sacramento region’s Big Day of Giving (BDOG) in May ended up raising $7.4 million for charitable causes in El Dorado, Placer, and Sacramento Counties. Mark your calendars (and checkbooks!) for next year’s BDOG on May 2.

The California State Fair recognized Wild Groves of Newcastle for the coveted Best of Show EVOO Award. The fourth generation, family-run business sells only the best olive oil from its local farm...Congrats to Brayden Johnk of Granite Bay who received a prestigious scholarship from Youth on Course—a nonprofit that provides youth with access to life-changing opportunities through golf. Johnk is attending Colorado School of Mines and majoring in environmental engineering this fall.
