What's Up: Roseville Granite Bay Rocklin

For the first time in their lives, 470 girls in need will receive new dresses, thanks to Debi Schneider and the Loomis Soroptimist Club’s Dress a Girl Around the World project. The challenge was for the local group to make 300 dresses, but the ever-capable crew had overwhelming support from members, family, and businesses to donate nearly 200 more dresses than expected.

Congrats to Steven P. Rudolph, Rocklin’s new city manager. After a unanimous vote, the former city attorney was welcomed into his new role.

Donors at Placer Community Foundation (PCF) recently granted $108,000 to local nonprofits in support of homelessness, hunger, health, youth development, animal welfare, land conservation, legal services, and arts programs, including Blue Line Arts, A Touch of Understanding, and Keaton’s Child Cancer Alliance.

Congrats to Rocklin High School journalism teacher Casey Nichols who was recently inducted into the Ball State Journalism Hall of Fame. Nichols—a Journalism Education Association (JEA) mentor—helped the students publish the national award-winning yearbook, Tonitrus, and personally received numerous awards for journalism education.

Over 50 artists across a variety of disciplines created unique and exciting sculptures out of found materials and repurposed books at the inaugural Think Outside the Pages sculpture contest. Held in conjunction with Placer County’s Earth Day Celebration and hosted by Arts Council of Placer County and Placer County Libraries, the People’s Choice Award went to Shipwrecked by Heather Lee Lincoln.

Santillan Jewelers moved from its Roseville location to 5738 Lonetree Boulevard in Rocklin. Owner Martin Santillan was excited to move to the new office building and continue offering affordable prices.

The former Woodcreek High School student who played in McDonald’s All-American Game, Jordan Brown, committed to the University of Nevada Reno. The basketball star was the last remaining uncommitted player in the ESPN 100 for the class of 2018. Brown has won two gold medals with USA Basketball and is excited to continue his sports career in Nevada.

Rocklin’s newest park—sited in a residential area between Silver Lupine Lane and Snowbrush Drive—is being named after nine-time City of Rocklin Parks, Recreation, and Arts Commissioner Christine Anderson, who has worked for the city for 30 years. Donations from Placer County Association of Realtors and Green Acres Nursery and Supply have allowed for a butterfly garden to be maintained.

Congrats to Dr. Denise Herrmann, Roseville Joint Union High School District’s new superintendent. Herrmann has 29 years of experience in education, with 10 years as a teacher and 18 as a high school site administrator.

Off-price home décor retailer, HomeGoods, opened a new 21,002-square-foot store store at 5446 Crossings Drive in Rocklin last month.

Beginning July 9, applications are available for Lean Up—a free, eight-week wellness program at Johnson Ranch Racquet Club. From September 10 through November 2, selected individuals will attend a small group boot camp three days a week, in addition to weekly personal trainer sessions, and receive free, unlimited access to the club and all its amenities. Area residents (ages 13+) who have had a lifelong struggle to be fit and healthy are invited to apply. For more info, visit leanup.net.
