5 Summer Safety Tips

by Master Amitis Pourarian, 7th Degree Black Belt and safety instructor and owner of THE STUDIO Martial Arts & Fitness

It's summertime, which is code for kids playing outside and having fun, but it's also the time to put extra emphasis on their safety. Take note of the following tips to ensure a seamless season for all.

1) Make sure your child knows your cell phone number

This is critical, as they need to be able to call you or provide it to someone who may be assisting them in a time of need.

2) If your child is allowed to ride a bike outside without supervision, teach them to latch onto it in the event someone is attempting to abduct them

This makes it that much harder for someone to nab a child.

3) Teach your child to sit and wait in place if they get lost

Rather than start roaming and get further away. This would apply if they get lost camping, at the store, at the beach, etc.

4) If your child is approached by a car while they’re walking, teach him/her to walk the opposite direction

Away from the car.

5) Have a safety password with your kid

If anyone says they’re supposed to give them a ride somewhere they’re not to go unless the person knows the password.
