Volunteers are the lifeblood of many nonprofit organizations. The Center for Violence-Free Relationships, a nonprofit sexual assault and domestic violence agency serving western El Dorado County, will host a Volunteer Orientation for anyone interested in making a lasting difference in the lives of survivors in our community. The event will feature an experiential exercise called In Her Shoes on Saturday, March 7, 2015 from 10:00 am – 1:00 pm at 344 Placerville Drive, Suite 11, Placerville, California. In Her Shoes is a simulation based on true stories that helps participants understand, in a very compressed period of time, the ups and downs a victim experiences over the course of many years. The goal of the exercise is to increase awareness of the struggles that victims face; to illustrate that domestic violence is a community tragedy, not a private problem. In Her Shoes illustrates that there is a role for everyone in understanding and solving the problems of intimate partner violence. The Center will hold Volunteer Training beginning on Tuesday, March 24, 2015 at 6:00 pm and running through May 14, 2015. Last year The Center’s volunteers donated over 3,000 hours last year to support victims of sexual assault and domestic violence in El Dorado County. Volunteer opportunities include a wide range of support activities: peer counseling, shelter volunteer, legal services, court accompaniment, office administration, batterer’s intervention, and community education. In addition to these services The Center is also recruiting for event and community affairs volunteers.
