The City of Placerville has put petal to the metal to help keep the spirit of Earth Day alive by continuing the celebration at a botanical-rich event held at Town Hall on Main Street. The Rhythm and Blooms May Day Party, scheduled to spring forward on May 1, from 6 to 10 p.m., invites locals and visitors to join together to enjoy the evening’s blooming flower baskets and good company in support of a “grassroots effort to help beautify Historic Main Street.”  No longer does the Hippie Generation claim sole ownership of flower power; this event showcases botanicals and horticulture that not only create a more artful landscape for the community to enjoy, but also helps Mother Nature nurture our world by promoting sustainability and ecologically responsible growing practices. Beyond celebrating the season’s greening for which May Day – an English tradition marked by dancing around large, brightly decorated maypoles, honoring nature and the spring equinox – this Friday night fundraiser will also feature a host of modern-day entertainment, including music by Hot Diggity, as well as a selection of delicious fare and a no-host bar with celebrity bartenders. Now that’s top shelf entertainment! For more information about Rhythm & Blooms, visit placerville-downtown.org or call the Placerville Downtown Association at 530-672-3436.For more eco-friendly tips and ideas, be sure to pick up this month's copy of Style – El Dorado County Foothills edition. AT YOUR DISPOSALReuse, recycle, rethink and waste not! That’s the message of the Diamond Springs-based El Dorado Disposal – a Waste Connections Company that offers integrated solid waste services to residents in Cameron Park, El Dorado Hills, Placerville and unincorporated El Dorado County. This service company, which collects, transfers, disposes and recycles environmentally unsafe toxins from your home’s unruly clutter, also helps rid the world of waste that has compounded the very immediate problem of climate change. El Dorado Disposal operates two separate recycling programs: the first is reserved for green waste; materials accepted for collection are grass clippings, brush, pine needles and cones; leaves, pruning and flowers, wood and branches. Residential materials accepted for the household recycling program include newspapers and various other paper materials; corrugated cardboard, paperboard and paper egg cartons; steel, tin and bi-metal cans; aluminum cans and clean foils, bottles and household cleaning products. (For a complete list of unacceptable items, refer to the Web site.) El Dorado Disposal also operates a large Material Recovery Facility, which is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., seven days a week. Beyond collecting residential waste from actual homes, El Dorado Disposal also operates three recycling centers in Placerville, El Dorado Hills and Cameron Park. E-waste is accepted at all three locations, all of which offer a can and bottle buy back service, and a drop-off box for household batteries. Removing solid waste and hazardous materials significantly impacts the health of the planet, and also upholds and protects public health standards. That is why El Dorado Disposal works with the county’s Solid Waste and Hazardous Materials Department, which is dedicated to safe waste removal accomplished through “enforcement activities, incident response, public education, litter collection and oversight,” according to the organization. El Dorado Disposal also holds various Spring Cleanup events each year. For more detailed information, contact El Dorado Disposal Customer Service at 530-626-4141 or 916-985-1162, or visit eldoradodisposal.com.For more eco-friendly tips and ideas, be sure to pick up this month's copy of Style – Folsom, El Dorado Hills edition. We all love to surf the Net, and if you have five hours to kill and no responsibilities, we say have at it. Unfortunately most of us don’t have access to that much leisure, so put your Web surfing skills to better use in maximum time. The El Dorado County Library has made it easy by posting a weekly list of links to various online sites that speak to current issues and pressing concerns. These days that means a dramatic rise in gas prices, inflation, recession woes, you name it. At press time, the site, called “What’s Hot on the Internet This Week,” has links to several media-rich Web pages and stories, the likes of which include environmentally responsible tips, current eco-statistics, information from Edmond’s green car guide, news about alternative energy resources and fuels, an automotive study about green vehicles, energy statistics and ways consumers can find relief from high gas prices and rising energy costs. Did we mention that the information comes with the convenience of accessing it from the confines of your comfy living room? Of course you are always welcome to surf the Net at the library. As good as that bit of news is, it actually gets better. You can also look up past environmental news via the library’s “Hot List” archive, which houses and catalogs up to four months of past “What’s Hot…” Web pages. With so much information available (literally at your fingertips), eldoradolibrary.org offers a helpful code to prioritize it all. A “Go” arrow is the library’s way of indicating a helpful site, while a checkmark references a site chock full of information especially pertinent to local residents. So get caught up on your summer reading with the help of the El Dorado County Library, online at eldoradolibrary.org.For more Green Tips, be sure to pick up this month's copy of FoothillStyle.
