Ask the Expert: Does Insurance Cover Cosmetic Procedures?

Q: Does insurance cover cosmetic procedures?
A: Insurance does cover quite a few reconstructive surgeries, but the patient needs to meet certain criteria outlined by their insurance company. For example, breast reduction is a common reconstructive surgery. Very large and heavy breasts can cause medical problems, such as shoulder pain, back pain, bra strap skin problems, etc., so insurance will cover a breast reduction operation and deem it "medically necessary." The same would be true for a dog bite to the face causing a scar.
