Hotel Drisco

2901 Pacific Avenue, San Francisco, 415-346-2880, hoteldrisco.com

Hotel Drisco

With an off-the-beaten-tourist-path location in posh Pacific Heights, a stay at the four-star Hotel Drisco feels miles away from the hustle and bustle of the city’s more notorious neighborhoods. And though the renovated rooms (48 in all), luxurious linens, and lavish interiors are all reasons to cozy up at the elegant 1903 Edwardian inn, it’s the impeccable service, hotel’s commitment to sustainability (rooftop beehives provide the hotel’s honey) and ample amenities (like complimentary e-bikes for easy exploring) that make a stay here extra special. Inclusive of your room rate is a gourmet buffet breakfast that rivals any restaurant (expect a generous spread of still-warm scones, smoked salmon, local jams, just-baked breads, made-to-order omelets, and espresso drinks) and an evening reception with unlimited artisan cheeses, charcuterie, and hearty hors d'oeuvres, plus fine California wines and craft brews. For travelers seeking upscale accommodations with serious staying-put appeal, Hotel Drisco checks all the boxes, and beyond.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO: Though the property predominately attracts couples and a more mature clientele, kids are also warmly welcomed and will even be pampered with some age-appropriate amenities upon arrival.

Dream Inn Santa Cruz

175 West Cliff Drive, Santa Cruz, 831-740-8069, dreaminnsantacruz.com

Dream Inn Santa Cruz

Step inside a lively, coastal oasis and wake up to the waves crashing at Dream Inn Santa Cruz, whose beachfront locale is just steps from the sand and the town’s top tourist attractions. From the light-filled lobby; to the surf-inspired, retro-chic rooms outfitted with tinges of turquoise and accents of orange; and the oceanfront pool that often hosts exciting activities (yoga! taco carts! ice cream!), a stay here is what vacation dreams are made of. Harking back to 1963, the hotel still holds tight to its mid-century heritage, but thanks to a multi-million-dollar renovation, has all the modern amenities and creature comforts discerning travelers crave.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO: Avail of the “California Dreamin’ 60th Anniversary” package (offered through December) and receive a dinner credit (the on-site restaurant, Jack O’Neill, is a must for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and all the eats and drinks in between), welcome bottle of vino and celebration glasses, discounted room rate, and more.

The National Exchange Hotel

211 Broad Street, Nevada City, 530-362-7605, thenationalexchangehotel.com

The National Exchange Hotel

Step into a piece of the past at Nevada City’s National Exchange Hotel (aka, the Nash)—one of the oldest continuously operating properties West of the Rockies—whose storied (and now boldly wallpapered) walls were erected in 1856. Though a lot has changed since the hotel’s inception (the property recently underwent a massive top-to-bottom restoration), the Victorian-era opulence—along with much of the original architecture—remains. Upon entering the registered historical landmark, your eyes won’t know where to land first. The funky-tiled floors? Richly hued, velvet sofas? Brass accents and antiquities sprinkled throughout? After geeking out on the interior’s perfect blend of old and new, you’ll be equally impressed when you step inside the grand guest rooms (each with carefully curated vintage furnishings and modern amenities aplenty) and on-site restaurant, Lola—where glamour and good food collide. Set in Nevada City’s charming, mom-and-pop-shop-filled downtown district and surrounded by Sierra Foothill scenery, a stay here is akin to striking gold.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO: While Wi-Fi is available (and fast!), you won’t find a TV tucked away in rooms—the hope is that guests will tune into each other and the natural surroundings instead.

Lafayette Park Hotel & Spa

3287 Mount Diablo Boulevard, Lafayette, 855-382-8632, lafayetteparkhotel.com

Lafayette Park Hotel & Spa

If a trip to the French countryside isn’t in the cards this year, worry not. You can experience joie de vivre (minus the jet lag) with a visit to Lafayette Park Hotel & Spa—a four-star regal retreat that greets guests with its cheerful yellow façade, well-groomed grounds (full of fountains, secret gardens, and beautiful blooms), and serene setting. Luckily, its luxe looks aren’t deceiving either. The interior is equally impressive, thanks to genuine service that’s professional without being pretentious, tastefully classic decor, and light, bright bedrooms that boast all the comforts of home. Spend the day relaxing at the on-site spa or sunning poolside with a good book. Hungry for elevated California cuisine with a French flair? Book a table at The Park Bistro & Bar for farm-fresh flavors in a classy yet casual setting. Should you feel the need to peel yourself away from the premises, tree-lined Lafayette—whose downtown is dotted with everything from a brewery and bistro to boutiques—is within close proximity.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO: The property—part of the Woodside Collection portfolio (a distinctive group of locally owned, independent hotels and resorts in Northern California) is preparing for a substantial refresh of its guest rooms, meeting spaces, spa, and restaurant. The revamp is scheduled to debut in 2024.
