Amp It Up: Retro Audio Gear

Just a few years ago, turntables seemed to be the retro flash in the pan—yeah, not so much. Soon enough, those weaned on, and iPod users came to realize that listening takes a significant leap when you find vinyl and good speakers. Well, if you’re wanting to “amp” it up another notch, and do it with cool vintage style, here are a few integrated amplifiers with turntable capability and knock-your-socks-off sound (and looks!).

NAD C 3050
The NAD brand has been synonymous with great sound and cool Euro design since their inception in the ’80s. The recently released C 3050, with its two power meters, wood accents, and killer sound may be one of the best values in audio today. Find it locally at paradyme.com.

LEAK 230
Next up is the LEAK 230. Based on a British brand of the ’70s, LEAK offers everything you need for a terrific system: power, plenty of inputs, and head-turning looks that anyone in your den will be drawn to. Find the LEAK line at musicdirect.com.

MCINTOSH MA252
The McIntosh MA252 takes things up a notch. This is a hybrid-integrated amp, meaning the preamp is controlled by vacuum tubes while the power is solid state. Some think this combination offers the absolute best experience. My two cents? Worth. Every. Penny. Check it out at performance-audio.com
