What's Up In July 2023: Notable happenings in our local communities.
Shop for bohemian and nature-inspired clothing and accessories at Wildflower Daydreams (wildflowerdaydreams.com)—a formerly online-only business started by Michelle Honath that now has a storefront in Rocklin at 6015 Pacific Street, Suite 12.
Yang Kee Dumpling (yangkeedumpling.com) is expanding to 1470 Eureka Road, Suite 170, in Roseville. The establishment, which has an existing location in Davis, is known for their homemade pork buns, soup dumplings, har gow, steamed veggie bao, garlic noodles, and other Chinese food favorites.
Santa Rosa-based Poppy Bank (poppy.bank) opened a Folsom location at 2760 East Bidwell Street (inside Bel Air). Recognized as one of the strongest financial institutions in the country, the business—whose mission is to meet the banking needs of clients and make a positive difference in the communities they serve—has grown to over $5.3 billion in assets with locations across California and other states.
Granite Bay will be welcoming DNA Wine Lounge (dnawinelounge.com) later this year to 9719 Village Center Drive, Suite 100. The approximately 2,000-square-foot space will include a wine bar and retail shop offering both international and domestic wines in myriad varietals, along with small bites (cheese boards, salads, sandwiches) and a sizeable patio.
Popular floating food boat, Anchored Eats, which is sited at Folsom Lake and open weekends from noon-5 p.m., expanded their offerings to land. The Shack, sited at Granite Beach and open daily from 11 a.m.-7 p.m., offers a full patio, high-quality food at affordable prices (burgers, fries, hot dogs, ice cream, etc.), as well as paddleboard, kayak, jumbo float, and game (volleyball, spike ball, badminton) rentals. For more info, visit anchoredeats.com.
American furniture retailer LoveSac (lovesac.com), which specializes in a patented modular furniture system called “sactionals” (two combinable pieces: "seats” and “sides”), along with custom-fit covers and associated accessories, opened a storefront in the Palladio at 280 Palladio Parkway, Suite 905.
Shorty's, located at 1216 Broadway in Placerville and owned by the duo behind Shorty’s Doughnuts (@shortysdoughnuts), is open and serving a delectable array of creamy, gluten-free gelato (including vegan flavors!) and freshly baked treats (donuts, fritters, cookies, cakes, etc.) in light, bright, family-friendly environs.
Popular mobile pizza oven Benji’s Woodfire Pizza (benjiswoodfirepizza.com) is opening a brick and mortar at 7530 Auburn Boulevard in Citrus Heights. The approximately 1,300-square-foot space—featuring an open kitchen, wood-fire oven, and pizza bar—will serve Neapolitan pies (cheese, Margherita, and creative offerings like the highly sought after "Hot Honey Ricotta”), plus appetizers like burrata jam crostini. The business is expected to open next month.
In-demand catering company Adoboink (adoboink.com)—which serves authentic Filipino food with a twist (like “oompa lumpia,” sisig nachos, “ado bao,” coconut shrimp, pancit, and leche flan) using fresh, locally sourced ingredients—opened an outpost at 1450 Lead Hill Boulevard, Suite 140, in Roseville.
Roseville is welcoming Ike’s Love & Sandwiches (ikessandwich.com) to 1132 Galleria Boulevard, Suite 120. Beloved for their Dutch crunch bread, “dirty sauce,” and array of subs (meat, vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, halal), each location also comes with exclusive offerings that are eclectically named as a tribute to local celebrities and icons.
Wise Villa Winery (wisevillawinery.com)—known for their organic, sustainable practices and balanced wines with fresh fruit character—entered 10 wines into the esteemed 2023 Sunset International Wine Competition—and all 10 were awarded, including a “Best of Class” and “Double Gold” for their 2022 Stainless Steel Chardonnay. Other award-winning wines were their 2020 Petite Sirah, 2021 Tempranillo, 2022 Bouquet of Roses, 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon, 2022 Sauvignon Blanc, 2022 Torrontes, 2020 Touriga Nacional, 2020 Zinfandel, and 2022 Muscat. Congrats!
The community is invited to explore (via biking, walking, or running) Roseville’s 40 miles of picturesque trails and complete the Trail-a-bration Challenge (roseville.ca.us/trailabration). Visit each of the nine highlighted trails and collect a stamp, then bring your completed passport (available online or at local libraries) to the CommUNITY Picnic in Royer Park on August 5 for a special prize.
Don’t miss Heartbeat of Folsom (heartbeatfolsom.com), a whimsical public art event—presented by Leadership Folsom, in collaboration with Choose Folsom—that features multiple heart sculptures installed throughout the city (locations include Red Bus Brewing Company, Adrian Blanco Jewelry, Palladio, and Folsom Premium Outlets). Each sculpture was decorated by a local artist to showcase Folsom: “the best city to live, work, and play.” A portion of fundraising proceeds will benefit Powerhouse Ministries, a nonprofit that serves families and individuals struggling with addiction, abuse, and poverty.
Congrats to Rocklin Donuts & Cinnamon (@rocklindonutsandcinnamon)—located at 4845 Granite Drive, Suite B—for being named number one in Yelp’s “Top 100 Donut Shops” in the U.S. and Canada. Businesses were chosen by being identified in the donuts category, then ranked using several factors, including the total volume and ratings of reviews between January 1, 2022, and March 3, 2023. Owned by the same family as BJ Cinnamon in Folsom, both locations serve cinnamon rolls, sticky buns, cronuts, and apple fritters, in addition to traditional donuts.
Placerville is exploring the potential of a program called Connect Placerville, which would deploy community-owned fiber optic infrastructure (lightning-fast Wi-Fi) throughout the city. If the initiative moves forward, it would significantly increase the speed and reliability, lower the cost of access for residents and businesses, increase competition between service providers, improve economic development and foster innovation, and improve city services like transportation and health care.
