Know Before You Go:
This is a popular trail for mountain biking, so listen carefully and be prepared to move out of the way. Expect crowds, especially come summertime. Dogs are welcome, when leashed, but may not be a good option with the bikers. Wear shoes with traction and lots of layers; pack plenty of water and, as always, leave no trace.

Why We Love It:
On warmer days, access to the Scotts Flat Reservoir is ideal for a midway dip. There are boat rentals at the reservoir, too, and a small store for drinks. The trail has plenty of shade, nice views, and boasts enough mileage to work up a sweat (and appetite!).

Fuel Up:
Northridge of Nevada City (northridgerestaurant.com) is a classic, small-town restaurant that has something for everyone: salads, sandwiches, burgers, and pizzas. With a laid-back ambience, it’s a perfect post-hike place for a pint (or pitcher!) and a bite. Be sure to check their website for weekly specials, too, like “Burger Mondays,” “Pizza Tuesdays,” “BBQ Thursdays,” and “Fish Fridays.”

Essential Hiking Gear

Here are a few must-haves to always carry in your pack:

Navigation
Whether your phone or a physical map, make sure you have a way of identifying your position. A backup charger is a good idea if you rely on your phone.

First aid kit
Make sure you’re prepared for minor scrapes, blisters, and bruises. Moleskin is a must!

Sunscreen
No one likes to be burnt.

Knife
This will come in handy for many situations.

Extra food
Keep some snacks on hand in case of an emergency.

Extra water/water filter

Extra clothes

Emergency shelter and space blanket

Headlamp
This will make your life much better when you need it.
