Congrats to the City of Roseville and Brown and Caldwell (brownandcaldwell.com)—a full-service environmental engineering and construction firm—for receiving the prestigious 2020 CMAA Project Achievement Award, which will allow them to complete a $19 million environmental improvement project to reduce nitrate discharges to water bodies and generate a renewable energy resource at the Dry Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant.

Kim Menzel is the new senior vice president and Roseville area manager of Kaiser Permanente (kp.kaiserpermanente.org). In her new role, Menzel will oversee administration of the 340-bed Kaiser Roseville Medical Center, among other duties.

American Public Works Association Sacramento Chapter (sacramento.apwa.net) selected Folsom’s Oak Parkway Trail Undercrossing—which provides a seamless and safe route for trail users to transition between the Oak Parkway and Johnny Cash trails—as its 2020 Project of the Year in the “Parks & Trails” category.

El Dorado Union High School District received the Energy Stewardship Award from Cenergistic, a nationwide sustainability company, after reducing their energy use by 18% in 18 months and saving over $400,000 in utilities.

Folsom baker and owner of Julian’s Pâtisserie and Café (julianscafe.com), Julian Perrigo-Jimenez, competed on the Food Network show Holiday Wars last month as the sugar artist on team “Blizzardly Bakers.” Locally, Perrigo-Jimenez is touted for making some of the region’s best baked goods, including croissants. As of press time, the winning team hadn’t been announced.

Congrats to Gigi Marchini, director of curriculum, instruction, and accountability at El Dorado County Office of Education, who was honored with the California County Superintendent’s Educational Services’ 2020 Student Programs and Services Steering Committee Star Award. Marchini has worked for the El Dorado County school system for decades and remains highly involved in the community, serving as a board member for Ag in the Classroom and New Morning Youth & Family Services.

Historic Folsom’s Rainbow Bridge Jewelers—sited at 721 Sutter Street—is celebrating their 42nd anniversary this year. Known for selling an impressive collection of wearable art that’s handcrafted by local artists, the shop was opened by Jim Kelly in 1978. In the early ’80s, Kelly partnered with artist Dorothy Cormack who is now the gallery’s chief buyer and art director.

Folsom native and rising country star Colton Graves released his debut EP, Smile for Me, with LA-based production company Extreme Music. Graves’ title track—a catchy, feel-good love serenade—can be streamed on YouTube Music, Spotify, and Apple Music. Follow him on Instagram @coltongravesofficial.

El Dorado County received a $100,000 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety for programs that focus on the safety and awareness of bicyclists and pedestrians, including education workshops geared toward youth and older adults, bicycle helmet inspections, and bicycle safety courses.

The nation’s leading builder of luxury homes, Toll Brothers (tollbrothers.com), is set to begin construction on an exclusive 55+ gated community featuring approximately 930, single-story homes in Folsom. Set on 303 acres, Regency at Folsom Ranch (regencyatfolsom.com) will feature five private neighborhoods with premium resort-style amenities, including an 18,000-square-foot recreation center with an indoor lap pool, outdoor pool, fitness studio, and spa; in addition to pickleball and tennis courts, gathering areas, and two dog parks.

The main wing of Sutter Roseville Medical Center (sutterhealth.org/srmc) received a refresh with the installation of local artwork. A new partnership with Blue Line Arts (bluelinearts.org) is allowing the hospital to feature contemporary art that will be updated every three months in many of the hospital’s common areas, hallways, and waiting rooms. HAPPENINGS

The Sacramento County Department of Health Services has partnered with UC Davis Health (health.ucdavis.edu) and Folsom-based biotech company StemExpress (stemexpress.com) to provide free COVID-19 tests for Sacramento County residents. The Folsom testing site is at Oak Hills Church (1100 Blue Ravine Road) and is open from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. every Wednesday. To schedule an appointment, visit saccounty.net/covid-19.

Kids of all ages are invited to step aboard a Magical Christmas Train  (riverfoxtrain.com/experiences/magical-christmas-train) for an open-air, 60-minute ride where they’ll be transported on a holiday wonderland complete with activities, a visit with Santa, treats, and time at a private park located along the Sacramento River. Families will be seated together and socially distanced from other passengers.

Folsom residents leaving town for the holidays are invited to avail of Folsom Police Department’s Citizens Assisting Public Safety program where a volunteer will walk the perimeter of your home, check doors and windows to make sure they’re locked, and remove

The Folsom Public Library (folsom.ca.us/library) invites residents ages 5+ to join their Winter Reading Challenge from December 1 through January 31. Each age group of kids, teens, and adults has a chance to win a prize pack bundle of books. To enter the drawing, simply read five books and log your progress at folsom.beanstack.org.

The upper division marketing class at William Jessup University (jessup.edu) was hired by Little Bear Tree Farm (littlebeartreefarm.com) to help promote their business this season. Using a mixture of social media and print advertising to reach new customers, the students are targeting families looking to start a new tradition in the wake of a pandemic. The family-owned farm—located in Alta—is full of photo opportunities, friendly animals, thousands of Christmas trees, unique gift shop items, and sweet treats.

Casual, full-service restaurant Tomatina (tomatina.com) opened a new location in the Roseville Crossings shopping center at 10505 Fairway Drive. Patrons can expect lovingly made dishes like piadines (Italian flatbread sandwiches), plus pizzas, pastas, soups, salads, and more.

Maribou Spa Salon (maribouspasalon.com), with three existing locations in Folsom, recently took over ownership of Nevaeh Salon in Roseville (3984 Douglas Boulevard, Suite 120).

Folsom’s Gold Miner Café (goldminercafe.net), formerly Mary’s Gold Miner Café, reopened at 426 East Bidwell Street and has a new owner: Kay Gardner. All of the restaurant’s home-style recipes are prepared in-house—from the gravies, to the soups, sauces, and cinnamon rolls—with a side of friendly service.

Northern California-based Teaspoon (teaspoonlife.com)—known for their assortment of cold tea beverages, including Liquid Gold (handcrafted honey-oolong tea topped with cream), and “snow ice” (ice cream meets shaved ice)—is opening soon at Roseville’s Rocky Ridge Town Center (2030 Douglas Boulevard, Suite 16).

Vietnamese restaurant Pho Mimi (phomimi.com), which features fresh-made, authentic fare like lemongrass tofu, bánh mì sandwiches, rice noodle soups, pho, vermicelli bowls, and more, is open at 25004 Blue Ravine Road, Suite 121, in Folsom.
