Halloween is on the horizon, which, for kiddos, likely means costumes, candy, and ghoulish games galore. For parents, it can be a real-life nightmare with all the worrying. Ensure this year’s celebration is seamless and spooktacular by reading the following safety tips.

BEFORE HALLOWEEN:

1. Plan costumes that are bright and reflective. Make sure the costume is not a tripping hazard and that shoes fit.

2. Consider adding reflective tape or glow sticks to costumes for greater visibility.

3. Secure emergency identification (name, address, phone number) discreetly within Halloween attire or on a bracelet.

4. Make sure you have fresh batteries for flashlights.

5. Teach kids their home phone number, and how to dial 911.

6. Plan the route and rules to be followed.

WHEN TRICK-OR-TREATING:

7. Try to go trick-or-treating while it’s still daylight, unless children are being accompanied by an adult; take a flashlight anyway.

8. Stay in a group and communicate where you are going.

9. Trick-or-treat in well-known neighborhoods and at homes that have a porch light on.

10. Never enter a stranger’s home or car.

11. Observe all traffic and pedestrian regulations.

12. Never eat unchecked candy. Have an adult inspect your candy.

13. Stay away from open fires and candles.

14. Don’t cut through alleys or fields
