What's Up in El Dorado County, October 2018

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, pink lights will be strewn throughout Placerville’s Main Street to help promote the work of Images of Hope and Marshall Medical Center in the fight against the disease. Beginning at 9:30 a.m. on October 13 at Wakamatsu Farm, join Gigi Tze-yue Hu, a semi-retired Asian studies educator and author, for an “Open Space Easy Tai Chai” class. Ages 8 and older are welcome and no prior experience is required. To register, email [email protected].

Handing out lifevests in Sly Park Recreation Area

Congrats to Active 20-30 Gold Rush #1034 for meeting their fundraising goal and thus donating 40 life vests to Sly Park Recreation Area in an effort to promote water safety in the community. The club meets every second and fourth Tuesday from 6-7 p.m. at Round Table Pizza on Missouri Flat Road and is always looking for new members, donations, and sponsors. On October 9, the El Dorado Hills Genealogical Society is hosting a genetic genealogy event. From 6-7:30 p.m., Jeane Berry will introduce attendees to DNA test types and tools available and explain what the data looks like after it comes back from the lab.

Coloma recently celebrated the long-awaited completion of the new Highway 49 bridge—which provides a safer American River crossing for walkers, cyclists, and motorists—at an event that featured live music, winery and brewery vendors, and local food.

Placerville resident John Winner was recognized with a Lifetime Achievement Award presented by the Oregon California Trails Association. For 24 years, Winner has marked, mapped, and photo-monitored trails, in addition to encouraging countless others to help maintain them.
