Foodie Find: Porottas South Indian Cuisine

Porottas in Roseville is proof that some of the most flavorful food is Indian…and vegetarian. I will admit that I’m not the most adventurous eater, so I was a bit surprised with this newfound love for something different. I started off on the safe side with an order of the Veg 65 Potato, which was essentially a plate of French fries but with a delicious, spicy kick to them (fun fact: the recipe traditionally has 65 ingredients, hence the name and all the flavor). Next, I tried Ghee Porotta—a warm, multi-layered bread with melty ghee (clarified butter). You won’t want to share this with anyone; it’s that good. I also sampled a Masala Dosa, which was akin to a large, savory crêpe stuffed with perfectly spiced potatoes and served alongside sambar (lentil soup) and, coconut, mint, and tomato chutneys. Luckily, I saved room for dessert, because the Shahi Tukda was my favorite dish of the day and another one you won’t want to share. If you like bread pudding, you’ll love India’s version of fried bread with sweetened condensed milk and spices like cardamom and saffron. Porottas is open daily for lunch and dinner, and serves authentic, entirely vegetarian (with vegan options, too) Indian food at reasonable prices. Did I mention you have to save room for dessert? 1245 Pleasant Grove Boulevard, Suite 120, Roseville, 916-771-0992, porottas.com.
