Folsom Zoo Spotlight: Meet Great Horned Owl Virginia

The newest animal resident at the Folsom City Zoo Sanctuary, Virginia, is a one-year-old great horned owl. She came to the zoo by way of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service after being confiscated as an illegal pet when she was four months old. A bird rescue organization kept her for a period of time until she was ready to move to her forever home. These large, thick-bodied owls—identified by prominent feather tufts on their heads—are nocturnal predators and come out at dusk to hunt for frogs, birds, and mammals, including ospreys and falcons. They have many adaptions to allow them to hunt at night: large eyes, heads that move 180 degrees, sensitive hearing disks to direct sound, and silent flying.
