Get to Know: Stephan Hogan of Folsom El Dorado Hills

Stephan Hogan still remembers the first time someone told him he couldn’t be a musician. He was in high school and did a presentation on what he wanted to be when he grew up: a country artist. The teacher wasn’t impressed, and he got a failing grade. Rather than be discouraged, however, Hogan was even more motivated to pursue his dream. In 2016, Guitar Center selected him out of thousands of applicants to play on stage with Vince Gill. Last year, one of his songs appeared on a Grammy ballot for “Best Country Song” and “Best Country Album” (Dangerous Love). He continues to write and perform throughout the region, and recently launched his own online guitar lesson business, Tone King Guitar Instruction, after having taught privately for 14 years.

Yet Hogan also does what he can to give back. A portion of proceeds from his business go to VH1 Save The Music Foundation, a nonprofit that brings music education back into schools. Hogan can also be found performing for services at Rolling Hills Christian Church in El Dorado Hills, where he’s the creative media associate. He’s passionate about teaching kids the value of music education, which, he says, improves cognitive function and problem-solving skills. “Music can help kids find their identity,” he shares. “I teach guitar because watching this instrument impact the lives of my students for the past 14 years has been inspiring.”
