5 Hot Products

Kale, coconut oil and Bluetooth speakers are so last year. Curious what’s next in the land of superfoods, kitchen gadgets and foodie finds? We put our editors to work—researching, buying and trying a handful of items—and compiled a list of 5 Hot Products to try. In no particular order…

1/SAKE TO ME

We know craft beer is booming, and wine has always been buzzing, but sake—a traditional sweet, low-alcoholic Japanese drink made from fermented rice—is the next big thing when it comes to alcohol. According to a 2017 article on forbes.com, “As Americans take a greater interest in food fermentation, some are following the now well-worn path of craft brewers, distillers and kombucha makers into opening up a new frontier, into artisanal sake.” Jump on the bandwagon buy purchasing a bottle today; sushi optional.

Try the trend: San Francisco-based Sequoia Sake, is all about creating fresh, live and accessible sake. Specializing in the Junmai variety—which means they use only water, Sacramento Valley rice, koji and yeast—results in a beverage that’s sulfite-, tannin- and gluten-free. They make three varieties—Coastal Ginjo, Coastal Genshu and Coastal Nigori—and (according to our taste-testers)—all three are worth toasting to (and with). For more info, visit sequoiasake.com.

2/HI (MANUKA) HONEY, I’M HOME

For thousands of years, people have used honey as a healing food, but manuka honey is more than the kind sold at your neighborhood supermarket. Crafted only in New Zealand by bees that pollinate the manuka tree, manuka honey has been popular in Asia, Australia, New Zealand and Europe for some time now, but is now catching on in the U.S. As one of nature’s most powerful superfoods, the honey is filled with natural antibacterial properties that can provide support for both digestive health and skin care.

Try the trend: Comvita UMF (Unique Manuka Factor) Manuka Honey is traceable to its source—from the hive to the shelf—and creates honey of the highest quality. Try it in your beauty routine via face masks, take it daily by the spoonful, add it to smoothies and toast, or try the natural toothpaste and lozenges. For more info, visit comvita.com

3/PROTEIN PACKED

With plant-based eating becoming increasingly popular, non-meat eaters need a way to get their daily protein fix—in other ways besides beans and tofu—too. Enter pea protein. The complete, dairy- and gluten-free protein is easily digested and ideal for building muscle, feeling full and recovering from workouts.

Try the trend: Good Zebra Spirit Animal Crackers aren’t only addicting and delicious, but made with a combo of organic pea and whey protein, egg whites, organic honey and organic coconut sugar. Each two-ounce serving clocks in at 12 grams of protein—that’s 23 percent of your daily recommended value(!)—and free of refined sugar. Offered in flavors like chai, lemon and vanilla, and available at Pete’s Coffee, these protein-packed bags of goodness are perfect for keeping you satisfied throughout the day. 4/FEEL THE PRESSURE

We all know time is precious, so it’s no wonder pressure cooking—the process of cooking food using water or other liquids in a sealed vessel—is literally gathering steam in kitchens all across the country. Not only does it cook food faster than conventional cooking methods (from rice, beans and meats to roasts and everything in between) but it saves energy, too.

Try the trend: Instant Pot is like a pressure cooker on steroids. The smart, multi-use programmable pressure cooker speeds up cooking by two to six times, uses 70-percent less energy and produces nutritious food in a convenient, consistent fashion. With their Ultra 10-in-1 Multi-Use Programmable Cooker, not only can you make yogurt, soups, stews and cakes, but it steams and sautés, too. We’ll cook to that! From beautiful, sleek machines to gorgeous glass brewers with specialty metals and woods, it seems that looks might be everything in the world of java.

Try the trend: Invented in 1941, the CHEMEX Coffeemaker—made simply from non-porous, borosilicate glass and fastened with a wood collar and tie—has remained nearly unchanged for 70-plus years.
