Folsom Parks and Recreation: Merry and Bright

Many hours of hands-on work by local families, businesses, community groups and city staff went into installing the lights, decorations and displays for the Folsom City Zoo Sanctuary’s eighth annual Wild Nights and Holiday Lights event. Thousands of feet of bright and colorful light strands, countless sparkling ornaments and trees, lighted animal figures, and seasonal displays transform the zoo into a winter wonderland. Bambi’s Tree Lot in Folsom generously provided more than 100 trees that were beautifully decorated by volunteers and placed throughout the grounds.

During the event, zookeepers provide enrichment for some of the animals—special treats or food tucked into cardboard tubes or specially wrapped boxes—to enhance the experience for both visitors and animals alike. Docents are also on hand to share their knowledge and provide fun facts and animal anecdotes. What’s more, it’s a chance to see how many of the creatures behave after dark.

The event expands this year to include the Barnyard Experience, an exhibit where Santa visits with guests and listens to holiday wishes. Each night of the event, local caroling groups and musicians add merry sounds, and the Folsom Valley Railway miniature live steam train provides special nighttime rides for kids and adults.

Wild Nights and Holiday Lights is open from 5-8 p.m. on December 1-2, 8-9, 15-23 and 26-30 (weather permitting; heavy rains will cancel). Admission is $7 per person and free for ages two and under; train tickets are $5 per person. On December 20, don’t miss Food Truck Safari just outside the zoo entrance in Folsom City Lions Park, and a gathering of costumed icons from around the region at a Mascot Mashup.

All proceeds benefit Folsom City Zoo Sanctuary animals, and tickets may be purchased in advance at webtrac.folsom.ca.us or at the gate.
