Folsom Parks and Recreation

The Folsom Senior Center recently celebrated its 10th anniversary and continues to provide a wide range of programs and services to the community. Located at 48 Natoma Street and open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday, and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the second Saturday of each month, anyone 55 and older (Folsom residency is not a requirement) is welcome.

Gloria Davis recently moved to Folsom and “didn’t know a soul.” She’s now a regular at the senior center and has “all sorts of friends.” Betty Becker says that “talking to and getting to know all different types of people” has been one of the reasons she’s been coming to the center for the past nine years.

A rotating schedule of free activities—from games, movies and book discussions, to bridge, and a popular “Off-Key Singers” group that meets Mondays and Fridays—takes place in the lounge, and everyone is invited to join in, whether they’re a regular or a rookie. The lounge maintains a stock of books, magazines, board games and puzzles, for those who want to engage in some quiet activity. Starting in September, free dances take place the first Friday of the month. Kick up your heels with a line dance lesson at 1:30 p.m. and then practice your new moves and enjoy DJ tunes from the ’50s and beyond until 3:30 p.m.

The Folsom Senior Citizens Club welcomes new members to its meetings twice a month at the center for lunch, games and occasional guest speakers. The center also provides space for seniors and caregivers to meet with a variety of community support services and agencies. The Meals on Wheels program provides a hot lunch at 11:30 a.m. Monday-Friday; seniors may also bring a packed lunch and enjoy the mealtime companionship.

Folsom Parks and Recreation offers a variety of classes for seniors, including fine arts and ceramics, yoga and Zumba, driver’s safety and even free guitar lessons. Those with limited mobility can take part in chair-based yoga and a “Sittin’ Fitness” class; free educational workshops are also offered throughout the year.

Don’t miss this month’s “Hot August Afternoon” party on August 11 at 1:30 p.m. featuring live entertainment and light refreshments.

Stop by the Folsom Senior Center for a free tour any time during regular business hours or visit folsom.ca.us.
