Catch All: World Gold Panning Championship

Aug 29, 2016 09:39AM ● By David Norby

From September 11-18, the 40th annual World Gold Panning Championship will tap into El Dorado County’s mineral-rich history—attracting hundreds of gold panners from around the country and world. Panners are timed as they pan 5-12 pieces of gold out of individual buckets of gravel, the best time advancing to the next heat until the final 30 competitors face off in finals for the title. The weeklong tournament is much more than just that, though—a competitive grape stomp, live music and more will accompany the main attraction. Spectators are welcome to attend, and coordinators are prepared to ensure all guests enjoy their visit. “With so many activities planned during El Dorado Gold Week, we are doing our best to take good care of our international guests, as well as out-of-towners, day visitors and the local community,” explains Executive Director of Tourism at El Dorado County Chamber of Commerce, Jody Franklin. Spectator admission and entertainment are free, except to see headliner bands September 16 ($15 pre-pay and $20 at the door) and on September 17 ($5 at the door after 5 p.m.).
