Q: Are chemical peels a permanent solution to removing acne scars?

A: Acne scars can be improved surgically and non-surgically through dermabrasion, laser and chemical peels. A chemical peel is used to remove the outermost layer of skin where most of the acne scar tissue lies. As the skin heals, it will bring in new skin, thus improving its appearance. There are a variety of chemicals that can be used, depending on the depth and aggressiveness needed. You will need to have an expert examine the skin and determine the best course of action.

Q: I’m hosting an event for 60-70 people and am not sure if anyone has dietary restrictions. What are the best dishes to serve to accommodate all of my guests?

A: When accommodating dietary restrictions, it’s always important to ask about serious food allergies—not just dietary preferences when planning your menu. A permitted professional, full-service caterer should be more than happy to accommodate special diets for guests and family. What’s more, there are very real liabilities involved should something awful occur, so make sure you’re prepared with the proper insurances. In other words, be ready for the worst-case scenario—plan ahead, ask on your invitations and RSVPs about serious food allergies, accommodate them, and make sure your caterer is in the loop fully…and fully insured.

Q: Are teeth whitening products effective on existing crowns or veneers?

A: Teeth whitening is a very simple, easily available way to make teeth whiter and improve the look of your smile. Crowns, veneers and even tooth-colored fillings do not lighten as much as natural teeth when whitening products are used, and in most cases don’t lighten at all. A simple consultation with your dentist can inform you which teeth will respond the most to whitening, how to use products safely, and warn you of dangerous whitening products that actually erode your teeth and irritate gums. They can also help you learn to use whitening products to lighten natural tooth surfaces that have not become darker than your dental restorations placed many years ago.
