Worldwide traveler Jackie Savoy, 89 years young, has traveled to every continent at least once. Last year, while preparing for a trip to China, she found herself stepping it up to REM’s song ‘Stand’ with a group of her peers at Eskaton Village Carmichael. “I never thought I’d star in a music video,” said Jackie. Twelve seniors all above the age of 80, including Jackie, showed the world how fun and easy it is to exercise. The video ‘Stand Tall, Don’t Fall’ garnered two gold AVA Digital Awards for outstanding Creative Directing and Awareness Building using a web video. Watch video.

 For Jackie, the video’s message provided a positive impact on her life. Prior to her vacation to China, she attended an Eskaton Health and Wellness Fair where she took an assessment that measured gait, the way she steps while walking. Jackie was surprised to learn she could improve her balance to help prevent falling. Realizing she’d be walking on uneven surfaces and going up and down hills and stairs in China, she enrolled in Eskaton’s Fall Proof workshop.

 

At the beginning of the class Jackie and the other participants were measured using a Timed Get Up and Go (TUG) test. During the six week course, the teacher led the group in balance and strength training. Tested again at the end of the class, Jackie had improved her measurements. She was standing tall and ready for China.

 

Jackie, who has more travel plans in the works, encourages others to watch the video and enroll in a fall prevention class. Eskaton provides a series of free workshops, in collaboration with Dignity Health, to teach exercises for better balance, strength and flexibility.
