This month, celebrate the “power of the pedal” and enjoy the many benefits of cycling! Anyone who lives or works in the Greater Sacramento region is encouraged to join the two million mile challenge, and log miles online at mayisbikemonth.com; cyclists can also enjoy a number of special events, including:

Great Scott Bike and Walk Event

May 1, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

More than 30 miles of beautiful country roads are closed to vehicle traffic for the exclusive use of cyclists and pedestrians. Made possible by the City of Folsom, Sacramento County, El Dorado County, the City of Rancho Cordova, the 50 Corridor Chambers of Commerce and a variety of community sponsors, this free event is open to fast riders (access the course from 8-9 a.m.) and families (from 9 a.m.-2 p.m., the speed limit slows).

The Fast Freddie Folsom Fondo

May 7, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Join former pro racer “Fast Freddie” Rodriguez, a four-time U.S. National Road Race Champion and 2016 Amgen Tour of California race ambassador for this fund-raising ride to support the Fast Freddie Foundation’s programs to get underprivileged kids on bikes. The Fondo starts and finishes at the Folsom Historic District amphitheater. Two routes are offered: 41 miles and 75 miles. A post-race celebration includes food, beverages, massages and a raffle.

Folsom Ride with the Mayor

May 12, 7:30 a.m.

Meet at Karen’s Bakery to fuel up with treats before the 8:30 a.m. departure. Along the 30-mile route, the group will converge with riders from Rancho Cordova and then continue to Discovery Park in Sacramento to join other cyclists for a catered lunch. After, the group will ride the last few miles to the State Capitol to join in the Capitol Bike Fest before rejoining the group to ride back to Folsom or hopping aboard light rail (free tickets for participants). Free, but participants are encouraged to pre-register online at webtrac.folsom.ca.us.
