A lovely little slice of Central Europe has opened at the top of Placerville’s Main Street, in a new restaurant called Euro Bistro. As of press time, the eatery’s been open about two months, but it’s sure to become a favorite in no time.

The kitchen specializes in scratch-made Czech cuisine, and the restaurant itself is spacious and inviting, with a street-side patio that’s perfect for al fresco dining. Those looking for authentic touches will be delighted to know that they serve Pilsner Urquell on tap—a perfect pairing to one (or more) of the alluring appetizers, whether you opt for the fried cheese, sausage taster with horseradish and mustard, or our choice—the potato pancakes (bramboraky). Similar to a potato rosti, these savory pancakes were crispy on the outside and tender inside, with delicious caraway seeds scattered throughout and applesauce served on the side.

For main courses, my husband went with the beef stroganoff special, which was served with spaetzle—tiny dumpling or noodle pieces with a texture similar to gnocchi that are boiled then pan-fried and ubiquitous in German, Hungarian and Czech cuisine—while I opted for the jagerschnitzel, chicken schnitzel served with mushroom gravy and spaetzle.

Beef Stroganoff

I’m a self-proclaimed schnitzel specialist, and I know that truly great schnitzel is hard to find. I can confidently say that Euro Bistro’s jagerschnitzel was, hands down, the best I’ve had since leaving Australia 13 years ago. Tender, juicy and beautifully crisp, I wept a tiny tear of joy. With the spaetzle and mushroom gravy alongside, I was in comfort-food heaven. My husband’s stroganoff was creamy and flavorful, and the beef was tender and plentiful. The dinner servings were impressive, too—make sure you come with plenty of belly room!

It’s clear that Euro Bistro is cooking from the heart, and there’s no better way to endear newcomers than with the perfectly prepared dishes of one’s homeland. Whether you’re new to Czech cuisine or a longtime fan, bring your appetite and leave with a smile.
