Placerville Friends of the Library's Tenth Annual Wine for Words August 16

Book lovers, history buffs—and anyone hankering to hear a truly astonishing story of the Old West—are invited to “hitch a ride” with Placerville Friends of the Library’s Tenth Annual Wine for Words fundraiser on Sunday, Aug. 16.
The event takes place at the Placerville Main Library, 345 Fair Lane, Placerville, beginning at 4p.m. with wine and beer tasting and live music. A catered buffet dinner follows, along with a raffle and silent and live auctions.
The evening will be capped by a presentation by Karen Kondazian, author of The Whip, a novel based on the remarkable life of stagecoach driver Charley Parkhurst.
The colorful subject of The Whip was actually born Charlotte Parkhurst in 1812. Reared in an orphanage, she ran away, assumed the name Charley and began living as a male.
Parkhurst sailed from New England to California on the heels of the Gold Rush and went on to become a celebrated stagecoach driver (“whip”), driving numerous routes in Northern California, including Sacramento to Placerville.
Braving occasional holdups and other adventures, Parkhurst drove stagecoaches for nearly 30 years, and it wasn’t until death that “his” secret was revealed.
Tickets, at $50 each, and are available now at the Placerville Main, Cameron Park and El Dorado Hills libraries.
