Fat's Asia Bistro

As my husband and I made plans for our Friday night date-night (which happens what feels like once or twice a year at this point in our lives), I increasingly became excited. Not just for a night out without children, but because our destination was Fat’s Asia Bistro in Folsom!

Our friends, Brian and Rachel, met us there, and we all eagerly awaited a night less our combined family’s six children.

Walking into the grand doors of Fat’s, I knew a night of relaxed, but elegant, dining awaited us.

As we perused the menu, our friendly waiter explained to us that Fat’s had recently updated their menu a couple of weeks ago. Some items had been renamed and changed up a bit. Family favorites are now highlighted on the menu for easy selection. Our waiter was very knowledgeable, giving us ideas about what classic dishes we should consider and new menu entrees to try.

We were all famished, so we started off with crab rangoons, a yummy appetizer filled with crab and cream cheese, accompanied by sweet and sour sauce.

Since I have had the pleasure of dining at Fat’s before, I knew my must-have meal for the night was the Thai seafood fat pot. Fish, shrimp, scallops and mussels are plunged into a rich coconut red curry broth for this delectable soup. Our friends had never experienced this tantalizing dish before, and it was the hit of our dinner. Brian kept saying how delicious it was, and how this was now his must-have dish!

My husband decided on Frank’s Hunan steak, which is one of the dishes that has recently been renamed and switched up a bit. Filet mignon with wok-fired vegetables made this dish absolutely delicious. The Filet Mignon was so tender it melted in your mouth. The seasonal vegetables were fresh and cooked to perfection.

Brian and Rachel rounded out our dinner with kung pao chicken and honey walnut prawns. The honey walnut prawns was an easy decision, with enticing prawns lightly fried with covered with a sweet honey sauce. The chicken dish was not as easy to decide on, with so many yummy choices such as orange chicken, cashew chicken and sesame chicken on the menu. Brian’s desire for something with a little kick made his final choice—kung pao chicken. The jalapeno peppers and szechuan chili spiced up his evening just right.

Everything was so delicious that we ate every single bite. Our bellies were so full from the generous portions (that we gobbled down) that dessert was unfortunately not an option. However, I have heard through the grapevine that Fat’s banana cream pie is the best! There is always next time I told myself, which is definitely happening because a trip back to Fat’s Asian Bistro is not an option for my palate—it is a must!!!
