Two friends, Frank and Casper, plan a canoeing trip together, which is a disguise for the two of them to go a sex craved vacation without their wives. The trip is foiled when Frank kidnaps his nephew Bo and forces him on the vacation to try and prove his fatherhood qualities to his reluctant newly pregnant wife Mia. Needless to say the trip does not go as planned.

This Danish film is said to be the foreign alternative to The Hangover. Although it shares some of the same traits, including incredibly dislikable lead characters, Klown dashes across the line of indecency so far I was curious how this film would be legal in our country. Most of the main themes and laughs in the movie involve a twelve year old child’s “willie”. They not only talk about it a lot but also show it visually, which I was a bit confused how that did not fall under child pornography?

Klown relies solely on sex shock value for laughs, subtlety is not even attempted. So if middle-aged married men planning a vacation they title “Tour De P****” is your idea of comedy then this movie was made for you. Honestly all the jokes are not the type I can safely describe on this site, but suffice it to say it is in bad taste. What’s most shocking about Klown is not the outlandish sex crazed grossness of it, but just how unlikeable the leads are. Not once did I want either of them to succeed when the movie obviously wanted them too. Neither of these men belonged anywhere near a child or a woman for that matter. So when they attempted to be the good guys at the end (which involved them kidnapping a kid and holding a store up at gunpoint) count me as flabbergasted and quite frankly appalled when their wives take them back.

I don’t know how much comedy was lost in translation as the movie is subtitled, but the Danish obviously have a much different sense of humor than me. Director Mikkel Norgaard put together the film in a sensible way I suppose, as the production values were high and the story was easy to follow, so perhaps it is the team of writers that are depraved and morally bankrupt. To be involved with a movie with such a low standard of decency doesn’t speak well to the conscience of anyone involved though.

It is rare that I see a film that makes me embarrassed and feel a bit dirty for having seen it, but Klown Is one of them. It is a film I strongly recommend that most people avoid at all costs, unless they have a morbid curiosity to see indecent films like the Human Centipede and the infamous A Serbian Film, and you know who you are. So when the advertisements of this film proclaim it the “funniest movie of the year!” all I can say is they are lying. I expect that the audience that would find this filth even remotely entertaining will have absolutely no interest in reading subtitles, so it’s safe to say that this film has a very narrow audience. Not many people seeing this movie is very good for humanity in my opinion.
