Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you?

Pilates Power offers group mat classes and private reformer lessons. I especially love the mat classes because people learn exercises they can perform on their own, without any equipment. Pilates is slow moving to encourage awareness and recruit muscle control. The combination of strength and flexibility coordinates the body’s extremities with one’s center, improving posture and overall mechanics. The exercises are performed laying or seated on a mat. I found Pilates when I was recovering from a ballet injury, and I loved it so much that I started teaching. I have been instructing for 14 years now, and I continue to discover benefits of the Pilates Method.

How are you involved with both the community and your customer?

To introduce Pilates to the community, I offer classes through Placerville’s Recreation and Parks Department; people can try a six-week introduction course before making a long-term commitment.

Why is your staff the best in the business?

Well, it is just myself, but I have a keen eye for structural alignment and correct muscular control. I offer modifications to accommodate individual strengths or weaknesses, so nearly anyone can do it. My Pilates format is a restorative approach, helping people improve their structural alignment, relieve back stress, and achieve an overall feeling of wellness. Students will learn their individual needs and build upon their techniques each lesson. One of my students called me “the queen of modifications.”

Who is your role model in business or in life, and why?

Janine Waggener, an agent with Coldwell Banker. She works hard, loves people, and upholds a high standard of integrity.

What’s your hidden talent?

Sewing and crafts; I actually have a side business making dog harnesses and clothing.

What’s your biggest job perk?

Watching people feel better through the Pilates Method.

What’s your favorite place to eat out locally?

Gold Vine Grill in Somerset – it’s fabulous!
