The Sierra Nevada House, with roots deep in Gold Rush history, has withheld the test of time, literally.

As fires have twice destroyed the building, the hotel/bar/restaurant has stood strong since it was rebuilt in 1925. Today, whether you’re game for a scenic drive outside Placerville or spending the day playing in Coloma, the Sierra Nevada House beckons with its hearty American fare.

My date and I sat outside one recent evening amongst lighted trees, as the sun set over the American River. Our starter of Bacon Wrapped Shrimp arrived promptly, setting the stage for the delectable meal to follow. Large, succulent shrimp were wrapped snugly in bacon and deep-fried, then served with a smoky, chipotle aioli for dipping.

We followed with the Sierra Steak, and even without a drop of sauce, the perfectly seasoned sirloin melted in my mouth. Never being one of those kids who separated their food, I combined the meat with the rustic red garlic mashers and bits of grilled veggies into one heavenly forkful. We also tried the Seafood Ravioli, which were filled to the brim with crab and shrimp and topped with a tangy lemon sage sauce.
To finish, although tempted by the selection of seasonal fruit pies, we shared the Death by Chocolate. The dense, flourless chocolate torte, served à la mode with vanilla ice cream, floored the taste buds with rich, cocoa goodness.

Serving dinner Wednesday-Sunday, the Sierra Nevada House is also open for lunch on weekends. The recently renovated bar, Buford’s, is a great spot to enjoy a bottle from local wineries while sharing a small plate. And fresh-off-the-river folks will love the outdoor River Café, to recharge with a burger and a pint. Keep an eye out for live music, salsa dancing and other special events scheduled throughout the summer.
