Brigadier General Donald J. Currier is truly a hero.

And don’t just take my word for it, his award this year for Style’s “Favorite Local Hero” is proof positive. Though born in Washington D.C., he was raised in Carmichael and attended La Sierra High School in the late 70s. Now General Currier and his family are residents of Folsom, and he deeply appreciates the huge amount of support that he gets from our little community. “The outpouring of support that I get from Folsom is truly inspirational,” he shares in an early morning phone interview, after calling in from Baghdad where he is on his fifth deployment in the current action.

Currently, his role in Iraq is to train local law enforcement authorities in modern and appropriate law enforcement techniques. Back home, General Currier is a lawyer in the service of the State of California…so it’s clear he knows both sides of the legal equation.

It was an honor for me to interview this gentleman, and I thanked him for his tremendous service and sacrifice. In closing our chat, General Currier reminded me, “Think also of all our service men and women all over the world who put their personal hopes and dreams aside while they have their national service to do. They are the ones who make my job possible. It is really good to know that there are people back home that are so supportive of us.”
