Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you?

Hues specializes in hair and skin care, (no nails). I started in this industry when I was 18, stayed with it, and thought it was time to open my own salon.

What was your first job, and what did you learn from the experience?

I babysat five days a week during the summer when I was 10. I learned responsibility, that I didn’t want to have kids until I was “old,” and I liked earning money.

How are you involved with both the community and your customer?

I am a member of the Rocklin Chamber of Commerce. I buy ads from local kids, give gift certificates for crab feeds, etc. I had a gal that wanted a makeover before she lost her long thick hair to chemo. We did the works on her at no charge. It was a lot of fun and she loved it! You can see it on our Web site. I also held a benefit for a staff member a couple of years ago. She was diagnosed with cancer at 32. The staff donated their time and days off; the community donated some great raffle prizes, and we raised $6,000 for her family. I recently had a long-time client diagnosed with the latter stages of ALS. I have been doing her hair for at least 12 years, and I made house calls as it was difficult for her to get to the salon.

Why is your staff the best in the business?

They really care about what they do, and they care about their clients. They have stuck by me through the good and the bad. My staff is a really nice group of people with big hearts.

What is the best thing about being the boss?

Sharing all the years of my experience, and watching stylists grow and be successful. When I see a stylist that needs help or is struggling, I can do something to help them. We all work together at Hues.

What life accomplishments are you most proud of?

Opening my salon, keeping it open during some years of adverse conditions, and staying sane during those times.
Having two beautiful kids.

And finally, customer service is…?

Giving clients the service they deserve! Having an educated staff that knows what they’re doing. It’s about the clients, making them feel good, even if it means staying to do a walk-in when you’re ready to go home.
