Holly’s Hill 2006 Patriarche
If there is one wine that I anticipate its release yearly, it has to be the Holly’s Hill Patriarche. This wine is modeled after the Southern Rhone Chateauneuf du Pape, and winemakers Carrie and Josh Bendick base their version on Mourvèdre; the result is simply amazing. It is a beautiful ruby color with a nose bursting of raspberries and cranberries, and upon your first taste you will notice its softness, earthiness, dryness, low tannins and a balanced acidity that finishes slightly spicy. The fruit is all estate-grown and is a blend of Mourvèdre, Grenache, Syrah and Counoise. I’ve even turned white-only-drinkers into lovers of this soft red. The Patriarche recently won the title “Best Rhone Wine in the Sierra Foothills” at the California State Fair, and won Double Gold at the El Dorado County Fair. Only 500 cases of the 2006 Patriarche will be released this year… so find yours soon!
