Placerville Recreation & Parks

Dec 07, 2012 04:08AM ● By Style

It was Winston Churchill who said: “We make a living by what we get; we make a life by what we give.” As we celebrate the season of togetherness and gift giving, who better to give to than the children of our own community? Because of the generous donations community members make to the Recreation for Youth Fund, about 150 of our city’s children are able to take one of the enriching classes Placerville’s Recreation and Parks Department offers every year. If families with financial constraints meet the requirements for receiving youth assistance, the Youth Fund pays for 50 percent of their child’s class registration fees every six months. The City of Placerville’s Recreation for Youth Fund was established in 1995 to serve the youth of El Dorado County. One hundred percent of every donation goes directly to the fund for disbursement to the children who apply. The City of Placerville believes every child deserves the chance to paint, dance, swim, play basketball or learn karate. However, the funds are running low. By donating, not only will you receive the satisfaction of knowing your money is going directly to the children of our community, but your name will be posted in the Activity Guide, which is delivered to more than 10,000 residents three times a year. Help keep this program alive and make sure that no child is turned away. To donate, call 530-642-5232 or mail your donation check to 549 Main Street, Placerville, CA 95667. For more information about the City of Placerville Recreation and Parks Department, call 530-642-5232 or visit cityofplacerville.org.

Folsom Parks and Recreation

Wild Nights and Holiday Lights returns with nearly 70,000 bright and colorful lights, thousands of decorations, and seasonal displays adorning the Folsom Zoo Sanctuary’s grounds, landscaping and animal exhibits to create a spectacular winter wonderland. A dazzling forest of beautifully decorated trees provides a picture-perfect backdrop for visits with Santa Claus, and Santa Paws – the Zoo’s holiday mascot – serves as a roving greeter to pose for photo ops. The merry sounds of caroling groups fill the air with holiday spirit. The exhibits of nocturnal animals – including cougars, bears, tigers and more – will be illuminated for enhanced viewing; zookeepers will conduct special feedings and provide extra enrichment activities. Each evening, docents will be on hand to share facts and anecdotes about the animals and answer questions. In addition, the Folsom Valley Railway miniature live steam train will provide special nighttime train rides for kids and adults.   Many hours of helping hands by families, local businesses, community groups and City staff go into installing the lights and displays that make this event so special. Bambi’s Tree Lot generously provides more than 100 trees that make up the enchanted forest and adorn the grounds. The event will run from 5 to 8 p.m. on December 7-9 & 14-23 (weather permitting; heavy rains will cancel). Admission is $5 per person and free for ages two and under; train tickets are $3 per person. All proceeds benefit the Folsom Zoo Sanctuary animals. For more information, call 916-355-7285 or visit folsomzoofriends.org.

Season's Eatings

Nov 15, 2012 09:00AM ● By Style

WHAT’S IN SEASON NOW: Winter squash! The calendar may say fall, but winter squash – which is actually a summer-growing annual vegetable available in the late summer, fall and winter seasons – is here. The vegetable comes in many shapes and sizes, but all varieties have hard outer rinds that surround sweet, often-orange flesh. Unlike summer squash, winter squash must be cooked. Thankfully, it’s relatively easy to prepare and can be enjoyed with cinnamon and maple syrup (for those with a sweet tooth) or, for a savory treat, steamed and dressed with olive oil, soy sauce, ginger and pumpkin seeds. DID YOU KNOW? Every part of the squash plant can be eaten, including the leaves and shoots, which are often used in omelets and soups.  Even the seeds from winter squash are edible; they make a great snack and are similar in taste to pumpkin seeds. In Placer County, winter squash can be purchased at farmers’ markets held year-round in Auburn and Roseville; also, it’s available at Pilz Produce in Auburn, Willow Creek Ranch in Penryn, Otow Orchard in Granite Bay, and at Natural Trading Company and Newcastle Produce in Newcastle. SELECTION AND STORAGE: The best winter squash are firm and heavy for their size with a dull rind. It’s ideal to store winter squash at temperatures between 50 and 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Once you cut the squash, it should be covered in plastic wrap and stored in the refrigerator where it can be kept for one to two days. If you plan to display the beauties in your home, they can usually be kept for up to six weeks. For more information about PlacerGROWN and the Foothill Farmers’ Market Association, visit placergrown.org and foothillfarmersmarket.com.
