People & Places in the News—October 2024
Popular Roseville brewpub The Monk’s Cellar (monkscellar.com)—a Belgian-style pub known for their award-winning beers and elevated, European-inspired fare—is celebrating their 10th anniversary this month. Celebrations will span the week of October 15-19 and include special beer and bourbon releases, a trivia night, and an anniversary celebration with live music and drink specials (October 18).

Congrats to Folsom History (folsomhistory.org)—which operates the Folsom History Museum, The Square, and the currently under construction Chinese Heritage Museum—for being awarded a SMUD Shine award. The funds ($8,041.61) will support an innovative project to add electric-powered induction forges to The Square, a historically inspired makerspace sited at 196 Wool Street, significantly advancing their blacksmithing programs and reducing their environmental impact.
In the “Oops, We’re Only Human Department,” we apologize for printing the incorrect date of when the original Mikuni in Fair Oaks opened in last month’s “Get to Know” editorial about Taro Arai. “What began modestly in 1987 has blossomed today into the true heart of the nine—soon-to-be 10—restaurants, as Mikuni Fair Oaks continues to represent the manifestation of conviction and perseverance—not to mention extraordinarily good sushi.”
Placer SPCA Thrift Store (placerspca.org/support/thrift) was voted “Thrift Store of the Year” by California's Third Congressional District, thanks to its outstanding contributions and unwavering commitment to supporting homeless animals in the community. Visit the award-winning business at 931 Washington Boulevard in Roseville to explore beautiful housewares, clothing, jewelry, furniture, and more.
One of Folsom’s most historic homes, the Hyman House—located at 603 Figueroa Street and originally built in 1881—is on the market for $2.5 million. Owned by Jacob Hyman, a dry goods merchant, the five-bedroom, three-bathroom house, with a parlor, library, dining room, and large bonus room, sits on a lot that is three-parcels wide and has been beautifully preserved, restored, and updated to retain its original charm.
