Travel with STYLE: SCP Mendocino Farm & Inn
The drive from Sacramento to Mendocino may be long (approximately four hours) but the journey is beautiful and boozy, thanks to ample wineries and breweries along the way. My advice? Take it slow and designate a driver, so you can literally stop and savor the sights. Once you hit Highway 1 and the craggy NorCal coastline comes into view, you’re almost there!
Even though the town of Mendocino—dotted with restaurants, shops, galleries, and more—is a mere five minutes away, SCP Mendocino Inn & Farm is a destination in and of itself. Surrounded by Van Damme State Park, once you check into the 15-acre, ocean-view farmstead there’s really no reason to check out.
The vibe is “chill”—the kind of place that instantly settles your spirit and puts your worries at ease—with wellness, nature, and holistic hospitality at its core (the “SCP” stands for soul, community, and planet). All 30 rooms (a mix of historic homes and a main lodge—all updated with modern furnishings and aesthetics) are cozy and well-equipped, thanks to Avocado mattresses, ample natural light, and wood-burning fireplaces.
Grab a glass of pinot noir (the unofficial varietal of Mendocino County) as you pay a visit to Larry, Curly, and Moe (the amiable resident llamas), feed the chickens (whose eggs provide the protein for your complimentary morning meal), peruse the on-site organic garden, or simply press pause to sit and soak in the stunning grounds and surrounds.
Sustainability is a big part of the property’s ethos, which is evident in every aspect of their operations. From composting and using 100% recycled paper and eco-friendly cleaning supplies, to eliminating all single-use plastics for bath amenities and water bottles, they strive to keep their carbon footprint low—and encourage guests to do the same.
Hungry? Terra Farm Kitchen, the on-site eatery, features a plant-forward menu (mainly pizzas, salads, and soups) that celebrates the abundant flavors of the region and season in laid-back environs. Rise and shine with a healthy but hearty homemade breakfast (plus coffee and fresh-squeezed OJ) delivered to your doorstep. Craving a workout? Several hiking trails are accessible from the inn—including one that takes you to a pretty (and pretty much private) beach; for guests wanting even more R&R, a spa lounge provides wellness treatments aplenty and specialty Anima Mundi Herbals.
If you’re itching to get away but wondering where to wander this winter, a stay at this semi-secret, incredibly serene bed and breakfast may be just the escape.
Perfect for families (my kids are still talking about the animals, the pizza, and our beach-day adventure), couples (salty sea air, redwoods, and red wine are a romantic match made in heaven), and solo travelers alike, the magically historic, A+ inn welcomes everyone with open, eco-friendly arms.
