Congrats to This Month’s Nonprofit of the Month: Clipped in For Life

Clipped in for Life’s mission is to create opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to find achievement, adventure, and connection through cycling. The organization specializes in events and programs for off-road cycling sports, such as mountain biking and cyclocross. Current programs are focused on getting kids in eighth grade and under off screens and onto bikes, ultimately engaging them in cycling as a lifestyle that provides mental and physical health benefits, personal growth, and a place to belong.

Volunteer Spotlight: Rebecca Hatt

What made you want to become a volunteer for Clipped in for Life? I started racing the Sacramento Cyclocross (one of the organization's races) and absolutely fell in love with the sport. Part of this newfound love was the community that it brought together; after I broke my hand riding my cyclocross bike, I still wanted to be involved in the race and with the community, so I showed up with my cast and asked what I could do to help.

What do your volunteer duties entail? They vary from event to event—everything from managing registration and setting up or tearing down events, to running clinics for riders and racers who want to learn and practice their skills. In my professional life, I’m a registered nurse, so I also help with medical situations at events; one of my duties is to ride the entire Mother Lode Epic and provide full medical support on the course.

Is there training required? With some parts, there’s hands-on computer training, but most often we have a wonderful volunteer coordinator, Jenn Fuss, who can take any willing volunteer and prepare them to do what is needed.

What’s the time commitment? At some events there are shifts but at others it’s an all-day adventure, depending on the role. If I can carve out the time, I give what I can, as often as I can.

What has been the best day of volunteering so far? Every time I show up to do anything for the organization is the best part of my day. Over the past 10 years that I’ve been volunteering, each day has been unique. The people that come together for this community feel like family; we have special bonds that bring me so much joy and happiness.

What’s one of the biggest challenges? Not being able to give more time.
