Ask The Expert: Rohini Rattu, DDS / Dimples Pediatric Dental

Q: How do I put my child at ease about going to the dentist?

A: The dentist office can be a challenging place for both kids and adults. It’s important for children to have a good experience early on, to avoid fear in the future. Keep things cheerful! Children react positively to situations when they hear positive words, so try avoiding words like, "pain," "hurt," and "scary." Another top tip is positive reinforcement—stickers, prizes, and verbal reinforcement—to reward a child when they’re doing well and so they have something fun to look forward to. Lastly, we recommend children come in early—first tooth or first birthday! If their first visit to the dentist is when they’re having pain or teeth issues, they can become anxious. Easy preventative visits allow them to establish a healthy relationship and build trust with the doctor and office.
