This Month In Style: August 2024

Time flies. When you’re having fun, of course, but particularly as a parent. It seems like only yesterday my eldest was a colicky, inconsolable infant, struggling to pack on the pounds and communicate her wants and needs; within the blink of an eye, she’s grown into a happy, healthy five-year-old with a spunky, independent spirit. This month, as she embarks on her elementary-school education, it’s another bittersweet reminder of how fast it all goes.

And while she continues to grow and age before my eyes, I seem to (physically) be aging even faster. Partly parenthood, and the lack of sleep and stress that comes with it, and partly the normal wear and tear of life, it’s amazing how apparent my fine lines have become.

Fortunately, this month’s article, “Aging Gratefully” (page 38), provides some simple ways to slow and accept the process; after all, the more wrinkles, the more memories, right? From cost-efficient, all-natural options like staying hydrated and getting an adequate amount of rest to spendier solutions (should Botox become my new best friend?), there’s a youth-prolonging idea for all.

Something that definitely does get better with age? Vino! Lucky for us, our region’s wine scene is incredibly robust and always expanding. Check out “Cheers to Wine!” (page 55) for a tiny taste of must-visit vineyards, including those that offer on-site accommodations, warmly welcome kiddos, or serve scarlet-hued slushies.

If escaping the triple-digit heat is on your to-do list (and a frosty frosé doesn’t quite cut it), then consider booking a trip to one of the “5 Cool Hotels” in literally cool destinations found on page 80. From Monterey to Marshall and Santa Cruz to San Francisco, we’re only a short drive away from brisk sea breezes and luxe lodging.

As always, we have plenty of food-forward editorial. Read about “Seriously Good Salads” that go above and beyond a boring bed of leafy greens on page 88; in “Cheers to Happy Hour!” (page 92), we celebrate jovial joints whose happy hours include deeply discounted bites and booze; and on page 84, contributor Ryan Martinez takes us to Junior Restaurant & Lounge for a weekend brunch (and bloody good Bloody Mary!) of champions.

Finally, for some handy-dandy hacks to keep your home organized and orderly before the back-to-school chaos commences, turn to “Conquering Clutter with Kids” (page 50); and in “Editor’s Picks” (page 42), discover 10 functional and fashionable school-year essentials that are appropriate for various ages and academic stages.

Whatever season you’re currently in, let’s raise a glass to embracing each passing year with gratitude, grace, and gusto. Cheers!
