What's Up In May 2023: Notable happenings in our local communities.

Folsom welcomed its first speakeasy-style bar and lounge, The Backroom (gaslightcofolsom.com), to 718 Sutter Street, Suite 200. The moody, dimly lit space—sited inside Gaslight Co.—features skillfully crafted cocktails and the city’s most diverse selection of whiskey.

Enjoy boiling hot pot soups (with your choice of protein, broth, toppings, and spice level), along with authentic Taiwanese appetizers, boba milk teas, and desserts at Tasty Pot (tastypotusa.com) in Roseville (1020 Pleasant Grove Boulevard, Suite 170). The fast-growing chain prides itself on serving healthy food in a cozy, contemporary setting.

New American restaurant Rose Park Bistro is scheduled to open this summer at the Fountains at Roseville. The 4,408-square-foot eatery at 1194 Roseville Parkway will feature a full bar, expansive outdoor lounge, and a menu featuring fresh, seasonal fare. Elite fitness chain Self Made Training Facility (selfmadetrainingfacility.com) is coming to 9580 Oak Avenue Parkway in Folsom. The private gym allows members to pick a personal trainer—each with their own rates and hours—that best fits their priorities, whether it's weight management, elite training, or bodybuilding. In addition to one-on-one sessions, small-group workouts will also be offered.

In addition to their El Dorado Hills location, Big Apple Bagels (bigapplebagels.com) will be opening a second storefront in Folsom. The 1,664-square-foot café will be at Commonwealth Square (next to Raley’s) on East Bidwell Street. Menu items will include scratch-made baked goods (bagels, breads, muffins, etc.), plus sandwiches, hand-roasted coffee, and espresso drinks.

Roseville has a new taqueria at 242 Vernon Street. Taqueria Los Cantaritos serves over 50 authentic Mexican food favorites (pozole, chilaquiles, California burritos, molcajete, etc.), along with a salsa bar, margaritas, micheladas, and more.

Renaissance Fine Consignment (renaissancecorp.com), a secondhand boutique that sells carefully chosen and vetted high-end clothing, accessories, handbags, and jewelry from designer brands like Chanel, Gucci, Hermes, and Louis Vuitton, is opening at 4357 Town Center Boulevard, Suite 116, in El Dorado Hills.

Tresses by Juless (tressesbyjuless.com)—which sells custom-colored, one-of-a-kind premium wigs and toppers, giving those with hair loss an attractive, realistic solution—opened a studio at 199 Blue Ravine Road, Suite 180, in Folsom.

Local Kitchens (localkitchens.com)—a micro-food hall that combines different eateries under one roof, allowing guests to conveniently order across menus—opened a second Placer County outpost in Granite Bay (8680 Sierra College Boulevard, Suite 195). Featured restaurants include Sushirrito, The Melt, Oren's Hummus, Rooster & Rice, Nash & Proper, and Square Pie Guys.

Clean Juice (cleanjuice.com), the only USDA-approved organic juice bar in the country, is opening in Roseville at 4191 Thrive Drive, Suite 130. Customers can expect offerings like cold-pressed juices, smoothies, toasts, salads, sandwiches, wraps, a kids’ menu, and more.

The El Dorado Hills Town Center is welcoming Encanto Cocina & Tequila Bar (encantoedh.com) to its list of dining options. The more than 3,700-square-foot space at 2023 Vine Street, Suite 200, is expected to open this summer and serve handcrafted cocktails and upscale Mexican food.

Head to Folsom’s Palladio (330 Palladio Parkway, Suite 2045) to experience Bakemono Sushi (bakemonosushi.com)—a restaurant specializing in both traditional and fusion Japanese favorites (ramen, sushi rolls, chicken katsu, rice bowls, bento boxes, and sashimi) in modern, inviting environs.

Cutting-edge, coach-led personal training franchise The Exercise Coach (exercisecoach.com/rocklin), which uses artificial intelligence and robotics to adjust its 20-minute workouts to customers’ strengths and weaknesses, opened at 6632 Lonetree Boulevard, Suite 500, in Rocklin. Vintage and specialty goods shop Bliss Market (vintageblissmarketplace.com), which also sells handmade goods by local artisans, is opening at 390 Roseville Square in Roseville. This will be the third local location for the business that operates as part of a co-op model where vendors rent booths within the shop.

Locally owned Hot Off the Griddle (hotg.net)—which has existing restaurants in Natomas and Orangevale and serves home-style country classics like chicken-fried steak and homemade corned beef hash, plus burgers, salads, and sandwiches—is opening at 4800 Granite Drive, Suite 1B, in Rocklin.

Sutter Health (sutterhealth.org) announced Mark Sevco as its new chief operating officer and senior vice president. Most recently, Sevco served as the executive vice president of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. According to Sutter Health CEO Warner Thomas, “Mark will play a critical role in advancing [Sutter’s] efforts to further integrate our organization and strengthen our relationships with physicians, so we can deliver better access, quality, and an overall consumer-centric experience.”

Congrats to this year’s El Dorado County Poetry Out Loud finalists: Alison Lee from Oak Ridge High School (first place winner), Summer Smith from Charter University Prep (second place winner), and Gabrielle Garlick from Union Mine High School (third place winner). Administered by Arts and Culture El Dorado, in partnership with the California Arts Council, the competition provides students with various resources to help them memorize, interpret, and recite poetry, instilling an appreciation of poetry and a sense of accomplishment and confidence in their public speaking skills. Rocklin-based online dog retailer Posh Puppy Boutique (poshpuppyboutique.com) has an automated retail vending machine inside Terminal B at Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas. Available items were curated to help calm dogs who may be anxious while traveling, in addition to practical products like leashes and treats.

Soroptimist International of Folsom/El Dorado Hills celebrated three amazing recipients of the Live Your Dream Award at Bacchus House Bistro & Wine Bar. The winners—Christine, Amy, and Desyrae—each have an inspirational story about overcoming challenges and were awarded $3,500 to help them continue their educational and career goals.

The El Dorado Hills Chamber of Commerce (eldoradohillschamber.org) hosted its Installation & Business Awards, where—in addition to dinner, a no-host bar, and silent auction—they announced this year’s business award winners, including “Start-Up Business of the Year” (Sierra Laundry), “Small Business of the Year” (Life Care Medical Supply), “Young Entrepreneur of the Year” (Noah Downing of Noah’s Auto Detailing), “Home-Based Business of the Year” (EDH Appliance Repair), and “Excellence in Business of the Year” (Marshall Medical Center).
