The Hot List: Cool Cones

Jan 27, 2023 11:46AM ● By Ray Burgess
From kale and cupcakes to butter boards, there always seems to be a new food fad hitting our “feeds.” One of the latest cool kids on the block? Cones! Classically fabulous with a scoop of ice cream, there’s a whole new world of cone-shaped food offerings to explore. No matter what flavor profile you’re craving, here are six fantastic finds.

Millionaire Cone
Feel like a million bucks without having to spend it when you order this savory option from Cluck N Cone. A waffle cone (made from the family-owned establishment’s proprietary recipe) is filled with chicken tenders that have been braised for 16 hours—the perfect time to ensure the chicken is neither mushy nor dry, according to Cluck N Cone creator Laura Garcia. Next comes the millionaire (and mouthwatering!) bacon, which gets rubbed with spices and candied brown sugar, then triple smoked, and baked for 30 minutes. Creamy avocado, crisp lettuce, and cool ranch balance out the masterpiece.

Nutty Professor
At Historic Folsom’s Sweet Dozen Cones, you won’t find classic cake or waffle cones; European-style chimney cones reign supreme. A cross between a churro and a donut would make for a delectable treat on its own, but we recommend trying the Nutty Professor: a chimney cone filled with walnuts, peanut butter, and chocolate gelato, then topped with granola and Oreo crumbles. If all this isn't enough to satisfy your sweet tooth craving, the creation is finished off with a Nutter Butter cookie. It may be filling enough to share—but you likely won't want to!

Charcuterie Cone
Are you hosting a party, baby shower, or just want something fun for a girls’ night? Look no further than a charcuterie cone from The Dancer’s Pantry. No one will have to awkwardly gaze at the last bites on a communal table, as everyone gets plenty of their own portions. There’s a little bit of everything—from brie and sharp cheddar, to manchego, salami, crackers, and in-season fruits and veggies—all tucked into an eco-friendly bamboo cone. If you need a non-dairy option, those are available, too.

Chipotle Mayo Chicken
Though this savory-meets-sweet option comes from a small food truck, Bubblecone, the flavors and portion sizes are big and bold. Your journey starts with a house-made egg puff waffle cone that’s subtly crisped on the edges but soft and chewy inside. It’s then filled with crispy yet tender chicken pieces and generously drizzled with chipotle mayo. The whole creation gets topped with crushed red pepper flakes and green onions for a slightly spicy finish. Find the truck every Sunday at the Folsom Premium Outlets or visit their website for upcoming events and locations.

Hard Swerve
Can’t decide between a boozy beverage or soft serve for dessert? For those 21 and over who would like a refreshing new way to experience hard kombucha, this one’s for you. At Shorebirds Brewing Co., a traditional cake cone meets a towering swirl of alcoholic soft serve that’s made using one of the brewery’s rotating hard kombucha flavors, like blackberry thyme or “apple of my chai.” The tasty treats range from having an ABV of 4-8%, so be sure to inquire before deciding how many servings (or licks!) you’d like. What’s more, the soft serve itself is vegan and gluten-free.

Black Sesame Swirl
This ice cream cone from Tokyo Cream is anything but basic. The adventure starts with a house-made cookie cone that’s Oreo-based with some activated charcoal to give it a distinctive dark color (it’s said to contain some cool health properties, too, like helping with digestion). Black sesame ice cream—made from organic milk—is then swirled together with Hokkaido milk ice cream. The high-quality Japanese milk has a nutty flavor with a light, creamy texture that isn’t quite as heavy as traditional American ice cream, making it the perfect pick-me-up noon, or night!
