Ask The Expert: What Should I Look for When Choosing a Therapist?

Q: What should I look for when choosing a therapist?
A: It depends on the person seeking treatment and their concern(s). The most important thing is to find someone who has experience dealing with the specific issue(s) you, or your family member, may be experiencing. If it's for kids, then look for someone who sees children and adolescents. If it's an addiction issue, then find a therapist who specializes in chemical dependency. It’s especially important when seeking marriage counseling to find a therapist who has a lot of experience and training in dealing with couples, as not all licensed therapists do.  Don't be afraid to ask questions to help you decide. And once you find someone, the benefits are endless. You’ll gain new insights and perspectives into your problems while learning some new tools and coping skills, too.
