Q&A with Local Companies: Katie Varman, MD, FAAD at Body and Sol Medical Phototherapy Clinic

566 E Street, Lincoln, 916-645-1447,

Services or products you offer: We specialize in treating inflammatory and autoimmune skin conditions—eczema, psoriasis, hives (urticaria), and vitiligo—by focusing on a treatment called phototherapy, which uses ultraviolet light to decrease inflammation in the skin and internally. We offer full body units, hand and foot units, and targeted therapy, which is like a laser. In addition, we determine the root cause of our patients’ health concerns through skin allergy testing, gut microbiome evaluation, and hormone testing. This type of holistic approach and thorough investigation is called functional medicine.

What you enjoy most about your profession: Working with clients to find out what their skin condition is saying about their overall health. Sometimes a rash can be as simple as an exposure to an allergen like poison oak, but sometimes it means much more about underlying imbalance and inflammation. It can be a real puzzle! It’s always rewarding to work with people who are motivated to optimize their health and wellness.

Fun fact about your company: We host evening vision board sessions, yoga, and other mindfulness practices.

Customer service is: Priority. We are here to help people.

First job: Leader at a kids’ nature camp.

Favorite food: Avocado toast on homemade sourdough bread with fresh tomatoes, basil, and vinaigrette—but some nights, pizza!

Favorite local restaurant: Simple Pleasures.

Last big purchase: A targeted UVA/UVB phototherapy unit for the clinic.

When not working, you can find me: With my family working on our farm. We have chickens, ducks, horses, dogs, cats, a rabbit, a pig, and all the plants.
