What's Up In July 2022: The Newest Awards, Events, and Announcements from El Dorado County to Roseville

The Markham Middle School Hands4Hope Club in Placerville held a gift card fundraiser for Lilliput’s Kinship program, a part of Wayfinder Family Services that finds ways to give youth a chance to thrive, find a safe haven, and remain with a family member when possible. The drive generated 17 gift cards that reached a total of $425 and will be used by youth in foster care to buy school clothes and supplies, and personal items to help them settle into their new homes.

Friends of the California State Fair—a nonprofit that promotes public awareness and generates support for the California Exposition & State Fair—awarded $44,000 in scholarships to 21 college students and graduating high school seniors who exhibit academic excellence, leadership potential, civic accomplishments, and a strong sense of personal commitment to continuing their education throughout the state. One of the $1,000-$2,500 scholarship recipients were Josephine Rothman of El Dorado. Congrats!

Stop by a local SAFE Credit Union branch and pick up a bold sticker illustrating landmarks, residents, and other notable sights unique to Sacramento. The collectible decals are part of SAFE’s “YOU” campaign celebrating SAFE members and small-business owners throughout 13 diverse counties the credit union serves. Local artist Hans Bennewitz partnered with SAFE to create the stickers. Bennewitz, originally from Auburn, graduated from Placer High School and attended Sierra College before earning his bachelor’s degree in design from Sacramento State University.

El Dorado Hills Endowment—known for its Giving Circle, Buy-a-Day Golf Tournament, and annual grant cycle for nonprofits serving the community of El Dorado Hills—recently made a branding change. Now known as the El Dorado Hills Area Foundation (EDHAF), their reach extends to Cameron Park, Folsom, and beyond as local needs are not defined by any single zip code.

Food Bank of El Dorado County is focusing their efforts on elder outreach and their “No Vet Goes Hungry” program in light of rising food and gas prices that are making it hard for people to make ends meet. The food bank—a collaborative network of local charities—provides access to healthy and nutritious foods. To support their cause, visit foodbankedc.org.

Red Bus Brewing Company has a new partnership with locally owned Sacramento Pizza Company. Kidz Gym Roseville has officially reopened at 5020-5 Foothills Boulevard. The boutique wellness gym for ages three and up includes tumbling, ninja parkour, jiu-jitsu, kenpo karate, kickboxing classes, and more. They’ve also opened a new Ninja Warrior Kidz sports center. facebook.com/kidsportzusa

Happenings

3rd Saturday Art Walks in Downtown Roseville are free events where you can find one-of-a-kind, handcrafted items. There are often mini murals, chalk art competitions, art demos, live music, and open art activities for all ages. The event on July 16 will include a chalk artist invitational, chalk competition for the youth, and a concert on the square featuring the band Invincible (Pat Benatar tribute). bluelinearts.org/3rdsaturdays

Wildwood Performing Arts Foundation presents the second annual Folsom Americana Fest showcasing national, regional, and local musicians and artists in genres including roots country, bluegrass, rockabilly, folk, and blues. There will be two concerts on July 16 and October 22 at the Dan Russell Rodeo Arena in Folsom, along with food trucks, beer, wine, and local vendors. There will also be “Young Artists Battle of the Bands” showcases through October. folsomfest.org

Maidu Museum is hosting a Stone Tool course on July 9 where you can create your very own stone tools using techniques passed down hundreds of generations (for ages 8 and up). Through August 14, Arts and Culture El Dorado presents Dark Mountain, Deep Valley at the Confidence Firehouse Gallery. The exhibit features a series of monochromatic paintings that dive into painter Loren Christofferson’s nebulous connection to Yosemite's remarkable landscape. Warfighter Overwatch is hosting a Hero's Welcome Home Party for Folsom native and U.S. Marine Corps Sergeant Tyler Vargas-Andrews—who's returning home without an arm and leg after surviving a deadly suicide bombing at Kabul Airport—at 8:15 p.m. on July 1 at Sacramento International Airport (baggage claim; terminal A). Attendees are encouraged to bring their patriotic spirit in the form of American flags and welcome home banners. From 4:30-7 p.m., head to the Eagles Lodge in Folsom to help tie yellow ribbons and decorate posters.
