Mallard Duck TALES: 5 Fun Facts

1) Mallard ducks are the most common and recognizable ducks in the Northern Hemisphere.

2) Their outermost feathers are waterproof due to an oil secreted from a gland near their tail.

3) Female mallards typically lay about one dozen eggs, and the incubation period lasts just under one month.

4) Duckbills are sensitive with many touch sensors, similar to a human’s palm and fingertips.

5) Females make the widely-know “quack” sound. Males produce raspier one- and two-note calls.
