Ask the Expert: Why is it Called Plastic Surgery?

Q: Why is it called plastic surgery?

A: Plastic comes from the Greek word plastikos which means “to mold or shape.” Plastic is a common material in our everyday lives as it has the ability to be shaped or molded into almost any form. The term plastic surgery refers to surgery that molds or shapes the human body and through plastic surgery, surgeons try to achieve balance, proportion, and symmetry to create beauty and harmony. With this shaping and molding of the body, enhancements go a long way in making a difference physically and emotionally.
