Do you ever find yourself craving the crunchy, carnivorous comfort of fried chicken but don’t want to drive through the commercialized KFC? I do. Truth be told, I’ve been on somewhat of a fried chicken sandwich mission as of late and finally found the perfect place to satiate those cravings: Mom & Pop Chicken Shop in the El Dorado Hills Town Center. I popped in on a late Sunday afternoon expecting the shop to be a little less busy, but to the contrary, folks were lined up for nuggets, sandwiches, and wings like meat bees at a picnic. Owner Nick Dedier (the guy riding the chicken on their window) shared with me that they’ve “sold 66,000 nuggets since opening in mid-November.” By the time this article comes out, those numbers could double. All of their chicken is brined, hand-cut, and breaded and fried to order—ensuring your meal is as fresh as possible. Early in the shop’s first few weeks of operation, they ran out of brined chicken pieces; Nick closed for the rest of the day. “I could have served unbrined chicken, but that’s not how I want you to try our food,” he told me. Now that’s quality control. The “Back to Basics” Chicken Sandwich was everything I’d been craving (including some delicious house-made spicy pickles), and the CHXSHP Nuggets were meaty and massive. Try some of their other offerings, too, like the fries, burgers, salads, chowder bread bowls, and donuts.
