On the Rocks: 3 Wonderful Whiskeys

It’s a wonderful world of whiskeys out there, but luckily Northern California makes some of the best. Whether you prefer yours neat, on the rocks, or mixed into a craft cocktail, we have a locally distilled bottle for you.

The Young Prince

TASTING NOTES: Composed of 52% corn, 30% barley, and 18% rye, this bourbon is complex, slightly sweet, and has notes of spice, with a long, smooth finish and soft mouthfeel. Even at 96 proof, it’s both delicate and full-flavored.

ABV: 48%  PRICE: $40

10th Street Peated Single Malt American Whisky

TASTING NOTES: Balanced, buttery, and full-bodied, this single malt whisky— crafted using peated barley sourced from Scotland and mineral rich water from Sierra snowmelt—boasts a subtle complexity, creamy flavors of vanilla and dark red apple peels, and a lingering peaty finish.

ABV: 46%  PRICE: $65

TRY IT: 10th Street Distillery, 2131 S 10th Street, San Jose, 408-991-3448, 10thstreetdistillery.com

Bodie 5 Dog Single Malt California Whiskey

TASTING NOTES: This florally, malty whiskey has a nice grain flavor without tasting of “peat”—the smoky and sometimes intense flavor associated with many modern Scotch brands—making it approachable and super smooth when sipping neat or with a large block of ice.

ABV: 40%  PRICE: $40.99

TRY IT: Amador & Dry Diggings Distillery, 5050 Robert J Mathews Parkway, El Dorado Hills, 530-313-4000, drydiggings.com
